The current LGBT Ukrain crisis news ~ In this, the sixth week of the horrific Russian invasion of the Ukraine, the violence and destruction continue. Even more tragically, as is so often the case when people are forced into survival mode ~ discrimination and persecution have spiked. This has made existence and finding safe haven especially difficult and dangerous for the LGBTQ+ population in the Ukrain.
The Ukrain is a democratic nation, and the LGBTQ+ community there has been making slow but steady progress toward nationwide acceptance in recent years. However, with the horror of the war, LGBTQ+ people find their situations even worse, often turned away or denied aid in favour of their non-LGBTQ+ Ukrainian counterparts. Further, trans people are being prevented from leaving the country, if their documents still list their gender as male. And, the queer population fears much worse discrimination and persecution should the Russians succeed in occupying the Ukraine. Russia is notorious globally for its harsh treatment of the LGBTQ+ population there ~ recently even passing a "anti-LGBTQ-propaganda" law, which makes it illegal for anyone to give any LGBT information to youth under the age of 18.
Back in the Ukrain, queer folk trying to flee the country often find their only options Poland or Hungary ~ where the LGBTQ+ are far from welcome.
On the brighter side, the international LGBTQ+ support network has kicked into action since day one of the war, and have been able to offer aid and/or safe haven to some of the LGBTQ+ refugees. Too, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is an LGBTQ+ ally, and has openly defended the community.
